PUEBLO, Colo. (GoThunderWolves.com – Mar. 30, 2014) — The Holy Names (Calif.) University Hawks won two of three doubles matches and took two important wins at the top of the singles order helping them post a 6-3 win over the host Colorado State University-Pueblo men's tennis team in a battle of regionally-ranked squads on Sunday here at Pueblo City Park.
The Hawks, who improved to 7-9 with the victory, are ranked eighth in the West Region according to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. CSU-Pueblo, ranked ninth in the South Central Region, fell to 4-9 this spring.
The Pack's first point came from Saul Shrom (Sr., Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada) and Emir Machado (Fr., Caracas, Venezuela), who claimed a thrilling 9-8 (7-3) win over Andrew Amor and Brook Workeneh at No. 1 doubles. Meanwhile, the Hawks claimed 8-1 and 8-5 wins in the No. 2 and 3 doubles spots, respectively, to take a 2-1 lead into singles play.
The ThunderWolves then received singles points from Marcelo Chaparro (So., Bogota, Colombia) and Trung Le (Jr., Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam) but could get no more as both Shrom and Machado dropped close matches Amor and Workeneh, respectively, in the top two singles matches.
Chaparro won his No. 6 singles match over Jonah Tahilan, 6-1, 6-2 while Le was leading 6-4, 1-0 when his No. 4 singles opponent Matthew Halligan retired.
The Hawks also received a 6-4, 6-3 win from Tracy Beblie over Sergio Avella (Fr., Sogamoso, Colombia) in the No. 3 singles match and a 7-5, 6-2 victory from Rafael Martinez over Joao De Silveria (Fr., Sao Paulo, Brazil) at No. 5 singles while Amor defeated Shrom, 7-6 (7-5), 6-3. Meanwhile, Workeneh came from behind to record a 5-7, 6-4, 6-2 victory over Machado in the final match of the day at No. 2 singles.
The Pack will have little time to dwell on the match as they will return to the courts on Monday at 3 p.m. to wrap up a 5-match home stand against Lindenwood (Mo.), ranked 47th nationally.
