Cohiba được đặt theo tiếng Taino có nghĩa là cây thuốc lá (tobacco). Các sử gia cho biết Columbus đã bắt đầu sử dụng từ "cohiba" thay vì dùng từ "tobacco" kể từ khi ông đến Cuba.

Cohiba Cuba có nguồn gốc từ những năm 1960, liên quan tới một vệ sỹ của Fidel Castro tên là Bienvenido "Chicho" Perez. Mỗi một loại xì gà đều được đặt tên gắn với 1 thế kỷ sau sự kiện khám phá vĩ đại. Ví dụ như Siglo I, Siglo II, Siglo III, Siglo IV, Siglo V và năm 2002 ra mắt thêm Siglo VI.

Habanos - Nhà máy sản xuất xì gà COHIBA Năm 2007 Habano SA ra mắt một dòng sản phẩm mới có tên gọi la Maduro 5 với 3 loại tương đương với 3 kích cỡ: Genios, Magicos, Secretos. Cách thức hút Cigar

Từ Cigar có nguồn gốc từ từ “siyar” (có nghiã là thuốc lá) cuả người Mayan. Đặc biệt không được châm cigar với nến, hoặc đèn dầu Bước 1 khi châm lưả: cầm điếu cigar nghiêng 90 độ, để đầu nó gần vào ngọn lưả. Xoay đi xoay lại để cho tất cả các mép cuả điếu thuốc cùng bắt lưả. Bước 2: đặt điếu thuốc lên môi và dít từ từ, tiếp tục châm lưả để cho phần đầu cuả điếu thuốc được đốt cháy thật sự. President John F Kennedy ordered an aide to buy him as many Cuban cigars as he could just hours before he authorised the U.S. trade embargo - which subsequently made them illegal.

Kennedy asked his head of press and fellow cigar smoker Pierre Salinger to obtain '1,000 Petit Upmanns' on February 6, 1962, so he could have them in his hands before they were deemed contraband.

Then, seconds after he was told the next morning that 1,200 of Cuba's finest export had been bought for him, he signed the decree to ban all of the communist state's products from the U.S.

The re-surfacing of the story, initially recounted by Salinger to Cigar Aficionado magazine in 1992, comes with the passing of the 50th anniversary of the embargo yesterday.
JFK, he said, called him into his office and said he needed 'some help' to find 'a lot of cigars'. He wanted '1,000 Petit Upmanns' and needed them by 'tomorrow morning'.
Salinger added: 'I walked out of the office wondering if I would succeed. But since I was a solid Cuban cigar smoker, I knew a lot of stores. I worked on the problem into the evening.

'The next morning, I walked into my White House office at about 8am, and the direct line from the President's office was already ringing. He asked me to come in immediately.
'How did you do Pierre?' he asked, as I walked through the door. 'Very well,' I answered. In fact, I'd gotten 1,200 cigars. Kennedy smiled, and opened up his desk.
'He took out a long paper which he immediately signed. It was the decree banning all Cuban products from the United States. Cuban cigars were now illegal in our country.'

When the embargo began, American teenagers were doing The Twist, the U.S. had yet to put a man into orbit around the Earth and a first-class U.S. postage stamp cost just 4 cents.
The world is much changed since the early days of 1962, but the near-total trade ban has remained the same.

Supporters say it is a justified measure against a repressive government that has never stopped being a thorn in Washington's side.
Critics call it a failed policy that has hurt ordinary Cubans instead of the government. All acknowledge that it has not accomplished its core mission of toppling Fidel and Raul Castro.
'All this time has gone by, and yet we keep it in place,' said Wayne Smith, who was a young U.S. diplomat in Havana in 1961 when relations were severed and who returned as the chief American diplomat after they were partially re-established under President Jimmy Carter.
He said: 'We talk to the Russians, we talk to the Chinese, we have normal relations even with Vietnam. We trade with all of them. So why not with Cuba?'
In the White House, the first sign of the looming embargo came when President John F Kennedy told his press secretary to go buy him as many H. Upmann Cuban cigars as he could find. The aide came back with 1,200 stogies.

It went into effect four days later at the height of the Cold War, a year after the failed CIA-backed Bay of Pigs invasion meant to oust communism from Cuba and eight months before Soviet attempts to put nuclear missiles on the island brought the two superpowers to the brink of war.
Washington already had some limited sanctions in place, but Kennedy's decision was the beginning of a comprehensive ban on U.S. trade with the island that has remained more or less intact ever since.

Little was planned to mark Tuesday's anniversary, but Cuban-American members of Congress issued a joint statement vowing to keep the heat on Cuba.
Supporters of the policy acknowledge that many U.S. strategic concerns from the 1960s have been consigned to the dustbin of history, such as halting the spread of Soviet influence and keeping Fidel Castro from exporting revolution throughout Latin America.
But they say other justifications remain, such as the confiscation of U.S. property in Cuba and the need to press for greater political and personal freedoms on the island.
Jose Cardenas, a former National Security Council staffer on Cuba under President George W Bush, said: 'We have a hemispheric commitment to freedom and democracy and respect for human rights. I still think that those are worthy aspirations.'
With just 90 miles of sea between Florida and Cuba, the United States would be a natural key trade partner and source of tourism.
But the embargo chokes off most commerce, and the threat of stiff fines keeps most Americans from sunbathing in balmy resorts like Cayo Coco.
Cuba is free to trade with other nations, but the U.S. threatens sanctions against foreign companies that don't abide by its restrictions.
A stark example arrived off the coast of Havana last month: A massive oil exploration rig built with less than 10 per cent U.S. parts to qualify under the embargo was brought all the way from Singapore at great expense, while comparable platforms sat idle in U.S. waters just across the Gulf of Mexico.

The embargo is a constant talking point for island authorities, who blame it for shortages of everything from medical equipment to the concrete needed to complete an eight-lane highway spanning the length of the island.

Every autumn, like clockwork, the vast majority of nations agree, and overwhelmingly back a resolution condemning the embargo.

Also each year, Cuba updates its estimate of how much the embargo has cost it, using a complicated - and some say flawed - calculus that takes into account years of interest, the end of the gold standard and other factors.
Last year's estimate summing 49 years of sanctions was $975 billion.
Even some critics of the embargo call Havana's claims exaggerated, saying that while the sanctions had a tremendous impact when first put in place, Cuba was able to adapt and benefited from relationships with like-minded allies such as the former Soviet Union and Venezuela.
Geoff Thale, a Cuba analyst at the Washington Office on Latin America, which supports ending the policy, said: 'There's no doubt that the embargo is detrimental to the Cuban economy.
'It complicates international financial transactions, but more importantly, it limits Cuban families' access to medicine. At the same time, Cuba's economic problems go beyond the embargo.'

While 50 years of socialism have brought advancements in areas such as education and health care, even island authorities acknowledge their perennially struggling economic system must change.
President Raul Castro is in the process of allowing more private-sector activity, decentralising state-run businesses, implementing agricultural reform and slimming government payrolls.

The United States actually does have significant trade with Cuba under a clause allowing the sale of food products and some pharmaceuticals.
According to the most recent information available from Cuba's National Statistics Office, the U.S. was the island's seventh-largest trading partner in 2010, selling $410 million in mostly food products.
However, that was down from nearly $1 billion in 2008, as the island increasingly turned to other countries that don't force it to pay cash up front.
Many U.S. businesses would love to be allowed into the Cuban market, but an end to the embargo seems a long way off.
The issue is seen as a political nonstarter in the United States, where every four years, presidential candidates take turns courting the Cuban-American vote in Florida, a key swing state.
President Barack Obama has said Raul Castro's economic openings are insufficient, and it's unlikely he would do anything in an election year to risk losing support in Florida, which he won in 2008.
Even if he wanted to lift the embargo, the Helms-Burton Act of 1996 stipulates that it would have to be approved by Congress.
Raul Castro, for his part, says recent changes in the U.S. such as allowing Cuban-Americans to visit relatives more often and send them more money are merely cosmetic.

Kinh nghiệm cho người bắt đầu trải nghiệm xì gà.

Ngoài những kiến thức & kinh nghiệm bạn có thể và sẽ đọc được trên các website hay diễn đàn chia sẻ về xì gà, đây có thể là những điểm quan trọng nhưng ít được đề cập đến nhất đối với người bắt đầu trải nghiệm xì gà.

- Khi chọn xì gà, bạn nên nhìn kỹ lớp lá thuốc xem có bị tổn hại không? lớp lá quấn ngoài còn tinh dầu không? ( sờ có cảm giác trơn min ) Vì xì gà được bảo quản tốt thể hiện rõ nhất qua 2 yếu tố này.
- Thình thoảng bạn sẽ thấy điếu xì gà có mùi giống amoniac nhưng đừng quá lo, đấy chỉ là chất phải ra trong quá trình nên men của xì gà. Nó không ảnh hưởng đến chất lượng xì gà.
- Không nên chọn đồ uống kèm xì gà có độ mạnh hơn xì gà vì nó sẽ làm hỏng vị của điếu xì gà.
- Khi châm lửa, bạn không nên đưa ngọn lửa trực tiếp tiếp xúc với điếu xì gà, bật lửa chuyên dụng cho việc châm lửa xì gà đủ mạnh để làm xì gà bén lửa ở khoảng cách gần. Hãy giữ ngọn lửa và để cho điếu xì gà bắt đầu cháy từ từ. Đây là điều cần lưu ý và nó không những giúp bạn trải nghiệm điếu xì gà tốt hơn mà còn giúp bạn thể hiện sự hiểu biết của mình, cũng giống như việc bạn nên tránh cầm ly rượu vang bằng cả lòng bàn tay vì nhiệt độ của bàn tay có thể ảnh hưởng đến vị của rượu.
- Không nên châm xì gà bằng cách đốt giấy báo vì hóa chất có thể ảnh hưởng đến vị của xì gà, dùng gỗ hoặc gas thì được.

- Không đặt điếu xì gà đã hút dở vào hộp giữ ẩm cùng với những điếu xì gà khác vì nó sẽ làm hỏng vị của nhưng điếu còn lại. Bạn nên cất riêng hoặc vứt đi nếu có điều kiện vì hút lại một điếu xì gà đã được hút sẽ không đem lại cho bạn những trải nghiệm giống ban đầu.
- Không để xì gà vào tủ lạnh vì như thế sẽ làm khô xì gà chứ không bảo quản chúng. Nếu xì gà bị khô, bạn hãy xem lại cách khôi phục xì gà ở các bài trước.

Khám phá cấu trúc của điếu Xì Gà

Nhìn từ phía ngoài, xì gà gồm 4 phần gồm phần chân điếu ( foot ) nơi châm lửa, thường được cắt sẵn. Phần thân điếu ( body ) rồi đến phần đầu ( head ) được phần mũ ( cap ) bảo vệ. Thông thường các hãng xì gà sẽ gắn thêm thương hiệu xì gà trên điếu, nhiều trường hợp phần keo dính có thể bị dính nên điếu xì gà vì vậy bạn không nên tháo phần quảng cáo này ngay khi hút. Bạn hãy hut khoang 5-10 phút để điếu xì gà nóng đều làm bong phần keo một cách tự nhiên để tránh làm hỏng điếu xì gà.

Cấu trúc bên trong được chia làm 3 phần gồm: Phần lá bọc ngoài ( wrapper ) thường được chọn từ những lá có tuổi thọ từ 1 năm đến 18 tháng, có nhiều màu sắc khác nhau ( mầu càng tối thì vị càng đậm ). Lớp lá giữ, gói ( blinder ) giúp cố định cấu trúc điếu xì gà, thường được quấn từ 2 nửa của những lá thô bản mọc ở phần gần ngọn cây thuốc ( những lá này có độ dai tốt ). Phần ruột ( filler ), đây là phần quan trọng nhất tạo ra sự đặc sắc của điếu thuốc. Thường được quấn một cách khéo léo từ những lá ở phần gốc, phần giữa và ngọn cây thuốc sao cho điếu thuốc có mùi vị ngon đặc trưng của từng thương hiệu.

Cấu trúc bên trong ruột xì gà: Thông thường phần lá ở ngọn (ligero) sẽ quấn ở trong cùng tạo nên lõi, những phiến lá ở phần thân (seco ) sẽ bọc xung quanh lần lõi và lá ở phần gốc (volado) sẽ bọc ở phía ngoài cùng. Lá ơ phần ngọn là phần tiếp xúc với ánh sáng mặt trời nhiều nhất nên thường có mầu tối, cháy chậm và tạo ra nhiều mùi vị phong phú. Lá ở phần thân có mầu nhạt hơn và mùi vị cũng nhẹ hơn phần ngọn. Và cuối cùng là lá ở phần gốc, dễ cháy nhất nhưng cũng đem lại ít mùi vị nhất cho điếu xì gà.

Làm thế nào để cắt điếu Xì Gà đúng cách.

Một điếu xì gà ngon đều cần phải cắt trước khi hút, vì vậy nếu bạn có một điếu xì gà cắt sẵn thì bạn nên vứt nó đi. Lý do rất đơn giản, khi điếu xì gà được quấn bằng tay thì một đầu của điếu xì gà sẽ được quấn kín thành hình nón hoặc mũ, điều này rất quan trọng vì nó sẽ tránh cho xì gà bị khô, bay mất mùi một cách nhanh tróng. Thế nên bạn chỉ nên cắt điếu xì gà khi chuẩn bị hút nó.

Về cơ bản, có 3 kiểu cắt xì gà với rất nhiều loại công cụ có kích thước khác nhau. Nhưng thông thường thì điếu xì gà vẫn được cắt ở đầu bịt kín, sâu vào 1/16 đến 1/8 inches ( 1 inches = 2,54cm => mọi người tự ước lượng nhé ). Và bạn nên chú ý để tránh cắt vào thân điếu xì gà lảm hỏng cấu trúc điếu. Một số cách cắt xì gà phổ biến có thể kể đến như sau

- Cắt bằng kéo: Đây là loại kéo có lưỡi đặc biệt được thiết kế riêng cho việc cắt xì gà. Kéo cắt thường thích hợp với xì gà loại lớn. Bạn có thể cắt thẳng như dùng dao nhưng theo kinh nghiệm nhiều người thì bạn nên cắt vát 1 chút sẽ dễ dàng hơn.

- Cắt bằng lưỡi dao bấm: Đây là loại phổ biến và cũng thường là loại rẻ nhất. Có nhiều kích thước phù hợp với nhiều kích cỡ của điếu xì gà. Bạn chỉ việc đưa phần đầu mũ của điếu vào và bấm dao. Lưu ý là bạn phải cầm điếu xì gà thẳng bàng một tay và cắt dứt khoát để tránh làm hỏng cấu trúc điếu.
- Một số cách cắt khác như đục lỗ đầu mũ điếu xì gà, hay cắt hình chữ V… các cách này tuy không làm hỏng cấu trúc điếu nhưng không phổ biến, và bạn hãy lưu ý là nếu bạn sử dụng đục lỗ thì phải xoay dụng cụ để đục lỗ chứ đừng bao giờ xoay điếu xì gà.

[h=3]Cohiba Lancero (cigar review)[/h]
This Cohiba Lancero, as others I've smoked recently, was a perfect specimen. Way back in the early 90's when I was just beginning my foray into the cigar world, a good Cuban Lancero or "A" was hard to find, many of them were plugged. They were either rolled too tight or with too much filler.... in some cases, a handful from a box were good to smoke. Over production by inexperienced rollers was the reason, supply and demand. However, they have fixed the problem and for over the last 15 years I've been smoking some damn good Lanceros, especially the Cohibas. This particular one is dated from 93-03, those are the years they used this particiular band. I got them as part of a package with other cigars and can't be sure. They were kinda just thrown in.
It was a firm, light coloured wrapper with few veins. It had a slightly tight draw which opened up after about 15 minutes. It was absolutely perfect at the halfway point. Consistant flavour all the way through, it was like smoking a light caffe late. It was so creamy and just kept going like that way almost down to the end, no change. At about an inch to the end I was getting some funky juices coming through and just put it down. For some of you, it might have been boring but I loved it. Very mild for my taste, I would even recommend it to a first time smoker. There are times I just want to relax with a cigar, no surprises, I don't want to fight or wonder. This cigar was the bomb. I have two more. I hope they're smoking the same.

El Aljibe Restaurant, Havana (cigar shop)

For a cigar lover Cuba is a paradise. Not only can you smoke just about everywhere, you'll also find some pretty decent cigar shops in the most unlikely of places. I wouldn't find a kiosk selling cigars in a restaurant unusual but an actual store..... The 'El Aljibe' restaurant is one of these places in Havana that has a cigar shop on the property. There's even a tiny smoking area even though the shop fills with smoke the instant someone lights up. This is not a large shop and the selection isn't huge but you'll see by the pictures it's not bad and actually there's a pretty good selection of singles being sold as well as the boxes.
So if you happen to be in Havana heading to the 'El Aljibe' restaurant and forgot your cigars....don't worry, you can buy whatever you need at the restaurant.

[h=3]Hotel Parque Central (Havana) Lobby & Cigar Shop[/h]
To say that Havana is full of cigar shops is an understatement. There are shops I'm sure I have yet to discover. Don't get me wrong, it's not a bad thing. One of these shops that no one hardly mentions is the one on the second floor lobby of the Parque Central hotel in Old Havana. I have never actually sat in it but have peeked in on a couple of occasions. I never see anyone there and often think this would be a great place to have a smoke and get away from all the confusion and noise of the city. It has a few comfortable chairs, a tv and a small selection of single cigars and a few boxes. I don't know if I would by my cigars from there but that's only because I have my regular places I buy from. If someone was staying at the hotel, this would be a good spot to start. The people that work there seem to be pleasant. One day I'm going to hide in this place and have a smoke. Here are some pics of the spot so you can judge for yourself.
I almost forgot to mention that this hotel has a rooftop pool and restaurant with an excellent view. It's on my to-do list the next time I'm there. Someone mentioned the hamburgers are good on the roof. I must give it a try. Perhaps on my trip next week. If I go I will write about it again for sure and include some pics taken from the roof.

[h=3]H.Upmann Magnum 46[/h]
Before 2005 this cigar had no band. Between 2005 & 2008 it carried the standard Upmann band & since 2008 until present day an additional Magnum 46 band was added. I remember having a box of these before they had bands. I remember wanting to have a box of these beautiful Corona Gordas at 46 x 143 (5.6"). After that box.....so many other cigars appeared on the market; regionals, limited editions....and I forgot about the Mag 46. I'm happy to have reacquainted myself with this wonderful cigar. This particular one was gifted to me so I can't tell you how old it was. However, after having smoked it I'm guessing more than a couple of years.
This cigar was as hard as a rock and got me worrying about the draw. It had a light coloured, almost veinless wrapper with a well constructed, bumpy cap. The pre-light draw gave me hints of coffee and wood. Once lit, the draw was just a hair firm. Now tasting chocolate and coffee with a touch of wood. The burn was way off. This was a good solid medium bodied smoke. Once I got about an inch into the smoke the draw was perfect but the burn was still off so I touched it up. At about the first quarter mark the wood flavours began to dominate. As I said, I didn't know how old this cigar was but at this point I realized it must have been more than a couple of years. It was well balanced, smooth, a very pleasant cigar. I enjoyed it more than the Magnum 50 I had recently.
The ash fell on it's own at about the halfway mark and it looked like it was burning well as it left a nice pointed ash. Past the half, the wood was getting stronger and the cigar was picking up a little strength. Nearing the last quarter the flavours changed slightly to woody and earthy with a hint of hay. The burn has been right on since the halfway mark. Losing the hay now and the earthiness began picking up strength.
Flicked the ash at the last quarter and picking up burnt coffee bean now. This cigar is still burning and smoking well. It tastes like it's going to be one of those cigars I burn right down to the end. Wrapper starting to crack past the last quarter but still smoking well even though the burn is a little off. Almost went out, burning hot through middle now. Went out while I was taking pictures so I relit it but it was getting hard to hold (just as I thought, good to the end). I had to stop, not so much for flavour as for the fact that I couldn't hold it any longer.
One of the better smokes I've had in a while. I was going to make this cigar one of five I smoked last Canada Day Weekend. I'm glad I didn't and gave it the time and attention it deserved by smoking it on this day. This cigar can hold it's own with many of the prestigious cigars I've smoked over the past year. It was an exciting cigar to smoke with the various changes it went through and the draw was absolutely bang on after the initial inch. Definitely a box I want to add to mu humidor.

[h=3]Cohiba Piramide 2008 (cigar review)[/h]
This cigar came in a box with four other torpedoes as you can see from the photos. It was released in 2008. This was the last of the 5 cigars that I smoked from this selection. Being a Cohiba fan, it took an awful lot of energy on my part to have held off this long before smoking this cigar. I'm glad I waited. I smoked this on the last long weekend in my city. It was cigar number 3 of 5 of the day.
It had a light coloured, slightly bumpy, almost veinless wrapper. The pre-light draw was woody and leathery. This stick was rock hard and had a slightly firm draw but was ok. The burn was almost even. Once I started smoking it, it became very woody and was a little better than a medium body. The burn was almost perfect and I don't quite know how to explain it but it was a very full medium body. The burn was perfect, very unusual for a Cuban. At about the quarter mark the ash fell on it's own.
Past the third mark, picking up hints of nutmeg but still very woody. This was a gritty cigar and a solid medium but building up strength close to the half-way mark. At the half-way mark the cigar was woody and earthy with a bang on perfect burn. Past the half-way mark the ash fell on it's own again and the cigar was beginning to taste a little bitter. Changed up again and by the time I got to the last quarter it was a very pleasant smoke.
As I neared the end I was getting strong wood once again and it was picking up strength. It was one of those done to the end smoke. It picked up strength as I neared the end and finally gave it up.
This was a very nice smoke. I'm sure it could have aged comfortably for a few more years but I couldn't wait that long and it's the only one I have. I wish I had a bundle of these smokes to sit on.

[h=3]Punch Diadema Extra Edicion Regional Italia 2008 (cigar review)[/h]
This cigar is huge, they call it a Giant Perfecto at 55 x 233 (9.2"). They made only 1,020 boxes of 10 cigars that were not released until early 2010. The reason for the delay was that they couldn't get the gold foil in time for the 2008 release date. I was lucky to have been able to try two of these while they were rolling them in Havana in 2008. I remember it being an amazing smoke but way to large. I couldn't finish it at that time but when I went to pick it up the next day (waste not want not) I remembered it still being great, like it wasn't left in an ashtray overnight.
This particular stick was sent to me by friends in Italy. I was looking forward to seeing what a few years has done to this cigar. Finding the time to smoke something this big is always an issue but today I was at an all day picnic, the perfect time. My only regret is that it was the 5th cigar of the day and I was pretty beat by the time I smoked this and I could have taken some better pictures.
It was a perfect example of a Diadema with a smooth, light coloured, veinless wrapper. It was hard to the touch and was very obvious that whoever rolled this was an expert. Pre-light draw gave me espresso and manure. I like to clip the foot of a Diadema as well as the cap. I know....how can I do that? Well, I've had many issues with the burn when I don't, so I like to help it along by just clipping a bit off so I have a larger surface to light. The draw was a little firm and the flavours so mild I couldn't figure them out. The burn was still a bit off. This was a very mild smoke that was giving very light coffee and cedar flavours. After the first inch I was beginning to pick up hints of chocolate. The ash fell on it's own before the first quarter. It was a very pleasant smoke and from my experience with these large cigars it's normal for them to be this mild. I've smoked a fair bit of "La China's" diademas from Partagas and I remember them being similar in strength. The draw continued to be a little tight and that made this an even longer smoke.
And so it continued like this, the flavours really not changing and neither did the strength, right down to where I stopped smoking. It was going out from time to time and I kept relighting it. After a couple of hours and down to about the last quarter I had enough and let it go.
I liked it but it wasn't very exciting. The flavours didn't change much throughout the smoke but it never tasted awful either and was consistent. The only issue I see is the one I always saw, how to find the time to smoke something this long and when will I be board of smoking it. Time, from what I can remember, hasn't changed this cigar much. It was a wonderful smoke 4 years ago and it's the same now. All I can say is, don't pass up an opportunity to check this smoke out for yourself.

[h=3]Castillo de Los Tres Reyes Magos del Morro (or Castillo el Morro) Havana[/h]

The Castillo el Morro sits pretty guarding the entrance to Havana Bay across from Old Havana. One of the oldest lighthouses in Cuba, built in 1846, is on the fortress grounds. The fort itself was built between 1589 and 1630 by the Spaniards who were the rulers there at the time. This fortress, as well as others on the island, was designed by an Italian military engineer, Juan Bautista Antonelli. At that time it was built for protection from raids. There was a heavy copper chain that linked the fort to another across the bay in Old Havana called 'San Salvador de La Punta' or just 'La Punta'. It would block unwanted ships from coming into the bay. During the time that Havana was encircled by a huge wall, the city would lock it's gates at 9pm and whoever was out would be left outside the protection of the city until the gates opened in the morning. The firing of a canon from the Castillo would indicate 9pm or the lockdown of the city. The wall surrounding the city is long gone (you do see pieces of it in parts of the city) but the tradition of the firing of the canon at 9pm goes on. It's all done up with the people (actors) involved wearing period clothing (military outfits) and going through a long procession with a slow march to drums all the way to the canon. It's all very nice and touristy with the torches in the night, someone barking orders and the wide sweeping exaggerated movements when loading the canon. The canon actually fires, not a cannonball of course, so it's really loud. It can be heard across the bay which is what it was meant to do. The whole thing takes about 40 minutes. It's completely dark before 9pm so a regular flash like the one I have won't be any good. I no longer own one but a video camera with night vision could probably pick it up. If you go just for the evening canon shot, it's a nice way to spend a couple of hours before or after dinner. A quiet walk along a cobblestone street, through a souvenir market and past the restaurants (offering the usual Cuban fare) to get to your destination.
To enter the Castillo El Morro during operating hours costs 5cuc which gets you access to everything within the fort walls including the lighthouse. Apparently you can go up the lighthouse, which I didn't know at the time. The inside of the castillo is set up with various exhibits within the different rooms depicting the history of the time through artifacts and pictures. There's also a little snack bar and a 3 piece band playing the traditional Cuban music that all the tourists want to hear. I wasn't writing this blog at the time of my visit so I'm sorry if I'm a little brief on the details and the pictures aren't better. I can say that there was enough to keep me occupied for a good 40 minutes. The view of Havana from this side of the bay is alone worth the cost. The cab ride from Old Havana will cost you about 5-7cuc one way to get the fort.
While you're on that side of the bay and you've already paid to get there, you might as well go to the other fort 'La Fortaleza de San Carlos de La Cabana' or just 'La Cabana'. It's only 1/2 mile away and has a cigar shop that holds the worlds longest cigar at 36 feet. I bought my first 2 boxes of cigars in this store when I was part of a one day group tour into Havana. They were the Bolivar Belicoso and the Hoyo Double Corona. Not far from there you can also find the 'Cristo de La Habana' that was unveiled in 1959 by the then President Batista. It's a majestic 66 ft. statue of Jesus blessing the city of Havana. Hopefully the restorations are done if you decide to go and you can actually see it. It's had scaffolds around it for a few months now. I've never eaten around here but some people have told me 'La Divina Pastora' with views of the fortress from the patio has some nice dishes but I can't say from personal experience.

[h=3]Bolivar Fabuloso Edicion Regional Benelux 2009 (cigar review)[/h]

I loved the look of this cigar that I smoked about a month ago, especially the size, an Edmundo or Robusto @ 52 x 135 (5.3"). 2600 boxes of 25 cigars were made. The BENELUX signifies Belgium, Netherlands and Luxembourg, which at the time the importer was distributing to these 3 countries.
This cigar had a silky, light coloured, veiny wrapper with a slightly bumpy cap. Although hard to the touch, the pre-light draw told me it was going to be fine. I was drinking a Mojito at this time and the flavours I got before lighting this stick were wood and spice. Once lit however, big change, floral notes. I'm not particularly fond of this flavour and hoped it would change but by the time I got to the first quarter the burn was off and flavours remained the same. Past the first quarter and nearing the second the draw was perfect and it was beginning to give off lots of woodiness but always with those floral notes. I've had to keep touching it up with my torch but otherwise burning well.
Last quarter earthy and floral. Too much glue on the second band when I took it off. It's a medium to strong bodied cigar. At this point I'm drinking a dry rose wine from Rioja, Spain. The last quarter is still floral and the cigar has gotten stronger. The floral notes kept coming and going at this point. Once the cigar turned on me I put it down.
I wasn't particularly crazy about this cigar's flavours but I don't like floral. Well constructed, good full body, an excellent smoke for those who enjoy that profile but not for me. I have another one and eventually will smoke it and compare. Thanks to my friend from Belgium for this cigar.

This cigar is about 3 years old picked off a roller's table in the Pinar del Rio factory in Cuba. It's a light coloured and slightly veiny wrapper which was otherwise fairly smooth. The pre-light draw gave me hints of cedar. Although the cigar was hard to the touch, the draw was good. Once lit I picked up flavours of wood and toasted coffee bean with hints of chocolate. The burn was a little off but the draw was perfect. This was a mild body cigar which was perfect as my morning smoke this day. I touched it up with my torch.
I love this cigar even though it's not a terribly exciting smoke. It's very consistent, I haven't found a bad one yet and it's always been the same. It reminds of the Cohiba Lancero, not in flavour but in body and consistency.
A quarter into the smoke and the burn continues to be off. By the time I get to the halfway mark, not much has changed in the flavour department except that I picked up hints of tea. I had begun to pick up a little strength but not too much. When there was a third of the cigar left, it went out. When I flicked the ash to re-light I noticed it was burning a bit hotter through the middle. The flavours remained the same however. Just past the remaining third and the cigar was beginning to turn but it was still smokeable. By the time I reached the last quarter the cigar was burning hot through the middle again and it was a bit floral which changed after a few minutes to be replaced by strong wood.
Finally the flavours began to turn to the point that it was no longer a pleasant smoke so I put the cigar down. I loved it. It was going to be a long day of cigar smoking the day I smoked this cigar and it was the perfect choice as the first smoke. This isn't an overly complicated cigar and sometimes that's exactly what I'm looking for. It's smoking very well right now at 3 years and always had since I bought them. I would strongly recommend this cigar which is completely different to all the others Trinidad makes.
